'John Davin Is Bolingbrook': Patch Local Hero

BOLINGBROOK, IL — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Donna Graham who nominated John Davin of Bolingbrook. Davin was nominated for his work at the VFW, and at Bolingbrook High School's AFJROTC.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

John works with not just the veterans through the VFW but also with the cadets at Bolingbrook High School AFJROTC. Pre-Covid, John took a group of cadets to a local veterans nursing home to play Bingo and my son enjoyed every time getting to meet and talk to the veterans. In addition, John attends (far too many) funerals for veterans and makes sure the families know they have a lifelong family with the VFW. My husband and I see John every Thursday night where he oversees "Veterans Night" which includes a 50/50 drawing, a Queen of Hearts drawing and pull-tabs. It involves quite a bit of work, but John is there every Thursday. John also happens to live around the corner from us, and he never fails to wave or even stop us to chat when we drive by. John is a gigantic part of Bolingbrook and I cannot imagine what we would do without him. I, personally, feel he's a stand-in dad for my daddy who was an Army veteran during the Korean War and who passed in 2019. I always get a hug from John when I see him (as well as ALL the VFW gentlemen) and he makes sure to check in on my health. I could write so much more about John Davin but I'm sure y'all get the picture!
