Naperville Mom Left Young Kids at Motel While She Went to Buy Heroin: Cops

The police said the woman made a habit of leaving her children unattended while she went to Chicago to buy heroin

NAPERVILLE, IL — A Naperville mom made a habit of leaving her young children — ages 2 months and 2 years — unattended while she went to Chicago with her boyfriend to buy heroin, police said.

When Melissa Stevens, 37, was arrested on a narcotics charge Thursday night, she had brought her 2-year-old along for a drug run to the city and left her 2-month-old at a motel with the child’s grandmother, police said.

The Department of Children and Family Services was still called in to take custody of the children.

The police had reportedly received a tip about Stevens leaving the children alone while she went to buy heroin and officers set up surveillance on her.

Court records list Stevens’ residence as a Motel 6 on Naperville Wheaton Road.

Stevens was pulled over Thursday night near Weber Road in Bolingbrook on the way back from Chicago, police said. She was arrested and taken to the Will County jail.

Stevens’ bond was set at $25,000. She remains in custody.
