State Trooper Shot While Carrying Out Search Warrant In Wheeling

State police said a suspect was in custody Thursday night.

WHEELING, IL — Illinois State Police late Thursday said a trooper was shot and wounded while serving a search warrant at a home in Wheeling, and a man accused of firing the shots from inside his home faces multiple felonies, including attempted murder.

According to authorities, ISP officers were serving a warrant at a home at around 6:30 p.m. when shots were fired from inside the residence.

State police told ABC Chicago that Volodymyr Dragan, 43, of the 400 block of Hickory Drive in Wheeling, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm to a police officer, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated assault of a police officer. He is accused of firing shots from inside his home, striking the officer.

The search warrant was served because Dragan was wanted for forcible detention, aggravated assault to a police officer and aggravated unlawful restraint related in connection with a traffic incident early Thursday morning, police told WLS.

One officer was shot and was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, ISP said.

The 32-year-old trooper is recovering was reportedly released from a hospital Friday afternoon.
