The Norman Mailer writing award is open to current high school students. Students may submit one or more pieces of writing as one file, maximum 10 single-spaced pages, endorsed by a teacher and released by a parent or guardian. One winner receives a cash award of $2,500 with travel and lodging to attend a special award ceremony.

According to English Department Chair David Lange, all five students submitted papers that they had written in their senior class Honors Seminar in Writing. The students come from all three sections of the course taught by Angelique Burrell, Heather Fehrman, and Jared Friebel. The essays themselves can be found in the 2015 edition of “Best Nonfiction Writing Hinsdale Central.”
