Burr Ridge Man Accused Of Killing Mother: Police

A mini sledgehammer was believed to be the weapon, authorities said. The suspect is said to have chased away a witness.

BURR RIDGE, IL – A Burr Ridge man killed his mother late last week, and a mini sledgehammer is believed to be the weapon, local police said.

Oscar Rodriguez, 37, who lives in the 9100 block of South Madison Street in Burr Ridge, was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery, police said.

About 6:30 p.m. Friday, Burr Ridge police were called to the house on Madison Street. Officers saw the victim, Virna Rodriguez, on the floor propped up against a chair, bleeding from her head and nose, vomiting blood and suffering a major wound to the left side of her head, according to a news release from DuPage County prosecutors.

She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead Sunday.

Another person was in the home at the time of the attack. When she went to investigate screaming, the witness saw Virna Rodriguez sitting at the table bleeding, with her son standing behind her, police said.

Oscar Rodriguez chased the witness upstairs, authorities said. The woman locked herself in a bedroom, but Oscar Rodriguez broke through the door, police said.

The woman then locked herself in a bathroom. Oscar Rodriguez briefly banged on the door before fleeing, police said.

State police arrested him a few hours later without any problems, the news release said.

Officers said they found the mini sledgehammer in the snow in bushes along the front sidewalk. It had what was believed to be blood on it.

Oscar Rodriguez was ordered jailed until his trial.
