If you get a call from someone who says he or she works for the IRS, the agency recommends the following steps:

  1. Request a phone number to call the person back and ask for an employee badge number.
  2. Call the IRS to crosscheck the information the person gives you: 1-800-829-1040
  3. If you’re able to confirm that the person who called you really works for the IRS, call them back.
