"The description matched [one of the teens] enough that officers were able to stop them. [The resident] got their clothing, height, weight...She gave a great description," said Burr Ridge Police Detective Sgt. Marc Loftus.
Officers say the teens were in possession of substances that are illegal for minors to have, and took them into custody for possession of a controlled substance (prescription pills,) possession of alcohol by a minor and possession of tobacco products by a minor.
While the officers were with the two teens at the police station, another officer was canvassing the area to look for anything out of place. That's when a call came from another resident in the area of 95th Street and Jackson, who said his home had just been burglarized.
The victim described several electronic items and pieces of jewelry that were taken from his home.
"Each of [the teens] had backpacks. All the stuff in the backpacks matched the stuff missing from the house," said Loftus, including electronics, specific brands of jewelry, alcohol and tobacco.
The officers with the two teens recognized them wearing jewelry that matched the description of jewelry stolen from the home. The teens also had jewelry stuffed in their pockets.
Police interviewed both teens, who told police they had committed the burglary.
One of teens, a 16-year-old male was charged with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony. He was taken to the DuPage County Youth Home to await a court hearing.
The 17-year-old male was charged with possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass and theft over $500. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail to await a bond hearing.
are continuing to investigate a similar residential burglary that took place on Sept. 24 at 93rd Street and Jackson. Burglars stole two computers, a projector and computer accessories from that home.
Det. Sgt. Loftus said he does not believe the teens are connected to a string of recent burglaries that took place on Old Mill Lane and Carriage Way, based on the circumstances.
"Because they were on foot and live near the area," said Loftus. "That would be too far for them to walk to be carrying backpacks and things like that. The farther they walk, the greater probability there is of them being spotted."
Loftus said the Old Mill Lane and Carriage Way burglaries were similar in that the homes burglarized were located near major highways. He said those burglaries are still under investigation, but they are looking at in connection with as persons of interest for those cases.
