BURR RIDGE, IL – A program is targeted to help Hinsdale South High School students in a Burr Ridge area neighborhood.

In October, a study group started meeting at the Hinsdale Lake Terrace Apartments. The complex is just outside Burr Ridge's village limits near Route 83 and Mockingbird Lane.

The apartments are part of Burr Ridge School District 180, where 70 percent of students come from low-income families.

Information about the study group was given during Thursday's Hinsdale High School District 86 board meeting.

"It's another way to provide additional academic support. You can do it right in the community," Superintendent Michael Lach said. "They still have space, so anybody at South is welcome to be part of that."

According to a flyer, the program provides academic support and a place to study for students who may not otherwise have access to supervised study groups.

During the 10 sessions from late October to January, an average of five students a week attended, ranging from a high of 10 to a low of three.

Students' areas of focus have been math, civics, English and biology. They have also gotten help with writing essays to get into college and seeking federal financial support for post-secondary education.

The flyer said, "Each week, students are fed so they can be fueled to succeed."

Lach said that involves "a lot of pizza."

The group is funded by DuPage County, managed by Hinsdale-based Community House and supported by Hinsdale South, according to the flyer.

Avanath Management, which manages the apartments, hosts the group.
