LA GRANGE, IL – La Grange police responded to a call about a serval cat that bit its owner a couple of weeks ago, the village confirmed.

In response to Patch's inquiry, Village Manager Jack Knight said it was an unusual circumstance for a resident to own a serval cat as a household pet.

The animal, often called a "giraffe cat," is native to Africa.

Because of the situation, the police department contacted Cook County Animal Control for help, Knight said.

"Cook County has since advised that the ownership of the cat is not illegal and will be taking no action," Knight said in an email. "The department cited the owner under local ordinance for having an unregistered animal in the Village."
