National African-American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) is today. Unit 4 schools are inviting parents to take part in special activities. Below is a summary of the activities happening at all of our campuses.

CECC is celebrating the African-American community through storytelling. Local Storyteller, Dawn Blackman, will be reading the children's story "Katy No Pocket" virtually on Zoom.
NAAPID Day:
Parents are invited to join a classroom discussion via Zoom! Students will talk about a variety of culturally responsive topics related to a video, reading or current event selected by their teacher.
NAAPID Week:
Throughout the week of NAAPID, parents will have the opportunity to use Flipgrid to respond to daily questions such as, "what does culture mean to you?".
Barkstall's Equity Committee will create a tutorial video for parents on how to use Flipgrid so all families are able to engage.
Families will have the opportunity to respond to the prompt with a short video, a poem, writing, etc.
Each family will have the opportunity to respond to other families' responses with a video or text comment!
Bottenfield teachers will welcome families virtually to explore a myriad of activities! Each classroom will showcase student work, collaborative projects, and curricular highlights including:
Books by Black authors and 25 Must-Read Children's Books for Black History Month
Research projects highlighting local Black Excellence in our community
I am Every Good Thing student self-portraits
Projects featuring African-American Inventors, Change-makers, and Athletes
Dr. Martin Luther King projects including “I Have a Dream” murals
Digital research projects of African Americans who have had a great impact on our society
Collaborative Famous Faces of African-American History Quilt
Children of the Civil Rights Movement project
5th grade Wax Museum
Make a Joyful Noize - student hiphop compositions
After completing a survey, students and families will be entered into a raffle to win a gift card to a local Black-owned business or a book featuring Black main characters.
This year Carrie Busey has invited school staff to decorate their doors with one less commonly known African American Hero. A slideshow displaying all of the decorated doors will be sent digitally to all families on NAAPID Day, Feb.14th.
In honor of NAAPID on Monday, February 14th, Dr. Howard will be welcoming families to school from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Family member will join students in a variety of classroom activities celebrating students, families, and African-Americans.

5th Grade MC will recite their poem!
To accommodate for space and social distancing, IPA will invite families to attend a Black History Month event of their interest throughout February.
Monday, February 8th
Students will hear a recorded presentation from our bilingual director, Viodelda Judkins, about being Black, Hispanic and bilingual. Her presentation will focus on the Afro-caribe culture and identity.
At 4:00, families will be invited to hear author, Asha Ntim, speak about self-love, identity, and the themes found in her books.
At 4:30, Black parents will be invited to a forum to discuss their hopes and dreams for their students and IPA with Ms. Tate and Ms. Ward.
Each Monday during February, classrooms will have a shared reading opportunity with a title from the book list below. By the end of the month, students will have had the opportunity to hear each book in their classroom.

Hip Hop Night, Feb. 17, 5:45 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Hip Hop Night is a family-friendly beat production and freestyling workshop. Learn more about the summer ISYM Hip Hop Camp at the University of Illinois. More information will follow on this Zoom event. The event will be hosted by Lamont Holden and Dr. Adam Kruse from the University of Illinois Music Department.

Two events will take place this month at Robeson to celebrate diversity and NAAPID. First, join us for Family Movie Night on February 10 at 6pm, sign-up required to ensure social distancing. We will also be asking guest readers to join us for Read Across America Week at the end of February- invitations and details coming soon.

"Opening the Door to Black History"
Students will participate in decorating their classroom door with a well known Black figure that they have selected.
A student and staff performance of “Sing About Martin” will be played during the day on classroom ViewSonic.
Teachers have the option of having families Zoom in to participate in some of the activities they are doing in their classrooms! Check with your student’s teacher for more information!
Middle School
Edison
Edison will be holding a virtual Black History & Culture Program on February 25th during 8th and 9th hour. The Edison's Minority Action Council (EMAC) and the Student Council will lead this event in partnership with the University of Illinois. This program will celebrate Black history and culture in our community, country, and history. We will also have a Black history decorating door contest throughout Edison Middle School with the theme Black Empowerment and Innovation. Additionally, many teachers have partnered with EMAC to create lesson plans for their classrooms around Black history and culture.
Jefferson
Families are invited to enjoy a game of staff/building Bingo
Each parent will receive a NAAPID drawstring bag with goodies and will have the opportunity to participate in a raffle.
The celebration of Black History Month will continue with Spirit Week activities Feb. 21-25

Building Wide: Universal Activities for Students & Staff Participation
Student Poetry & Photo Contest
Students can submit a poem or picture (self-drawn or a photo taken by them) that honors/celebrates/spotlights black excellence or social justice. Poems and Pics will be displayed on the FSA Google Classroom throughout the month of February (and on FSA social media).The student body will vote through the FSA Google Classroom and the "winner" will receive lunch of their choice!
Classroom Door Decorating Contest
FSA Staff can choose a class to decorate their door with a "Black History" or "Social Justice" theme. Pictures of the door will be posted to the FSA Google Classroom for a vote on the winning door. The winning class will receive a pizza party!
