Cyclist Caught Looting Unlocked Cars: Cops

The Joliet man went to pedal away but never really got rolling, police said.

The cops caught a cyclist looting unlocked cars on Cornwall Drive early Monday morning, police said.

Wesley Akinola, 20, was holding property, including a check, that had been stolen out of two different cars when he was taken into custody about 2 a.m., police said.

An officer on patrol reportedly saw a parked vehicle’s dome light illuminated. The officer then spotted Akinola, astride a bicycle, alongside the car, police said.

Akinola attempted to pedal away but the cop caught him before he could get rolling, police said.

Akinola gave officers two different names that were not his own, police said, but then signed his actual name on a legal form, giving himself away.

Akinola reportedly explained that he lied about his name because he knew he had a warrant out for his arrest.

Akinola was arrested on the warrant, which charged him with failing to appear in court on a traffic case, and on new charges of burglary from a motor vehicle, resisting or obstructing a police officer, and obstructing identification.
