Fiery Crash Shuts Down Interstate 55 Tuesday Morning

The northbound lanes were shut for 30 minutes, but the southbound lanes were shut down for more than 6 hours.

A crash between two semis that caught on fire Tuesday morning left Interstate 55 shut down in both directions just after 6:30 a.m.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Martez Malone said the southbound lanes were expected to open before 1 p.m. Tuesday, but they had been shut down for more than 6 hours.

No one was injured in the crash.

The crash happened on southbound Interstate 55, between the Route 6 and Bluff Road exits in Channahon.

Although the accident is under investigation, preliminary reports say one semi rear-ended the other and both caught on fire.

"We do confirm that one truck rearended the other," Malone said.

The situation was complicated because one semi was carrying a type of gas and the second was carrying a paper product so the fire kept re-igniting.

That area of Interstate 55 is under construction.
