Troy Middle School is in its second year of publishing its own school newspaper, written by the students in the school’s Newspaper Club. The seven-page monthly paper contains well-written, informative, and sometimes even surprising, news, feature articles, poetry, doodles and a lot more.

It’s written in their own words, with light editing from their sponsors, teachers Nicolle Oldenburg and Holly Souza.

“Our students are really into reading and sharing the news,” Oldenburg said. “The newspaper they write brings fun information at the students’ level that they want to share with their peers. Doing the research also gets them more involved with world news and their community. I’m just really proud of them.”

The fun read includes community news, fun facts about each month, messages from the principal and counselors, a peer advice column, interviews with students and staff, information about school clubs and sports, and a library corner.

Each month, the newspaper also highlights information about one of the local high schools.

National and even international news also has its place in the publication. In the February issue, the club wrote about Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the tanks the U.S. and Germany are sending the country.

The paper also includes some original art and poetry done by the students.

The club recently hosted a speaker, Troy alumna and NewsNet anchor Madison Schlegel, who spoke on what it takes to become a journalist.

Troy Middle School is a Troy Community School District 30-C school.
