New York Times best-selling author of middle grade literature, Gordon Korman, recently paid a visit to William B. Orenic Intermediate School (W.B.O.), giving several presentations - one to fifth-graders, one to sixth-graders, one to life skills students, and a writers’ workshop for a small group of aspiring W.B.O. writers.

Before his visit, each student was given a copy of Korman’s Masterminds, the first of a trilogy. The students were encouraged to read the book at home with their families. In addition, the students and staff participated in a reading-themed door decorating contest, which was judged by Korman himself on the day of his visit.

"Meeting an author like Gordon Korman inspires our students to be creative in their own writing and in their own work,” Sixth-grade Principal Kelly Landers said. “His visit promoted literacy and helped our students gain a better understanding of the writing process.

“We also enjoyed learning about what inspires Mr. Korman,” Landers said, “where he has struggled as an author and how he has overcome those difficulties so that we can become better readers and writers ourselves."

Troy School District 30-C Library Resource Center Facilitator, Carrie Upjohn, said Korman has written over 100 books which are consistent favorites of Troy students. His books appeal to multiple grade levels and encompass many genres.

Upjohn said this visit was one of many special author guests Troy Community School District 30-C has hosted this school year.

“Each author visit has provided students a unique perspective into the career of an author,” Upjohn said, “and has encouraged a love of literacy within each school community.”
