2 Ex-Security Guards Arrested Over Holy Name Cathedral Burglary
The men are accused of taking as much as $100,000 from the church's collection.

CHICAGO, IL — Two former security guards for Holy Name Cathedral were arrested Sunday for allegedly stealing possibly $100,000 in collections from the church earlier this month, according to Chicago police. Artemio Calderon, 25, of the 4700 block of South Damen Avenue, and Jarrell Patterson, 22, of the 600 block of East 87th Place, each were charged with felony burglary to a school, day care center or place of worship stemming from the incident.
Calderon and Patterson previously had worked for Monterrey Security, the firm that has provided security for the cathedral for the past six years. At the time of the burglary, only Calderon was still employed at the company at the time of the reported burglary.
According to police, the two men allegedly used a key to enter the church and then broke into a safe in the cathedral. Investigators identified Calderon and Patterson from security camera videos, and they were arrested Sunday, April 29, without incident, police said.

Although investigators did not have an exact amount of how much money was taken, church officials believe as much as $100,000 after discovering weekly donations were not meeting projections for April. The weekly differences between projected estimates and actual collections each week ranged from $15 to $5,000.

The Rev. Greg Sakowicz, Holy Name's rector, told the Chicago Tribune on Monday that it would be improving cathedral security. Part of that included dropping Monterrey, which also handles security for Soldier Field and Navy Pier, as its security firm.
Before its contract with Holy Name had been canceled, Monterrey had fired Calderon after learning about the burglary at the cathedral. Patterson had been let go in January, the Tribune reports.
Both men were ordered held on $10,000 bail during a hearing Monday afternoon, the report added.
