2 Firefighters Hurt Battling Blaze In 21-Story Loop Building

Two people also were rescued by ladder from the burning building early Wednesday.

CHICAGO, IL — Two firefighters were hurt fighting a three-alarm fire early Wednesday morning in the Loop. Two people also were rescued from the blaze that burned thorugh a Jewelers Row building, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The fire happened about just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the 21-story Mallers Building, 5 S. Wabash Ave., the report stated. Firefighters were able to control the blaze by 3:30 a.m., although crews did have a tough time battling smoke on the third and fourth floors, the report added.

The rescue was made by ladder after the two men in the building began tapping on a window to get the attention of firefighters, the report stated. They went to the window because of the massive amounts of smoke in the building's hallway, the report added.

The injured firefighters were taken to a local hospital, the report stated. One suffered from overheating while fighting the fire, and another received a minor injury to his leg, the report added.
