1,190 Chicago Flights Canceled As Winter Storms Hit Illinois

As snow continued Wednesday, more flights were canceled at Chicago's Midway and O'Hare airports.

CHICAGO — With snow continuing to fall in the Chicago area and more on the way Wednesday night, drivers were being warned to avoid travel if possible, and hundreds of flights around the Midwest were canceled. In Chicago, more than 1,190 flights had already been canceled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday out of O'Hare and Midway airports.

With as much as 9.5 inches of snow in some parts of the Chicago area, FlightAware was reporting:

  • O'Hare: 45 flight cancellations on Tuesday; 657 on Wednesday; 321 for Thursday
  • Midway: 8 cancellations on Tuesday; 93 on Wednesday; 66 for Thursday

Another snowstorm was expected Wednesday night into Thursday.

Nationwide, more than 252 flights had been canceled on Tuesday, with another 2,195 on Wednesday.

Dozens of Chicago area schools, libraries and government buildings were also closed Wednesday, with many school districts opting to shift to online learning.

Meanwhile, Gov. J.B. Pritzker had declared a state of emergency across Illinois, mobilizing snow plows and even the National Guard to help state police as road conditions worsen.
