Ald. Raymond Lopez Tweets Plans To Challenge Mayor Lightfoot in 2023

"Chicago: I'm in!" 15th Ward Ald. Raymond Lopez tweeted early Wednesday to announce his candidacy for mayor in 2023.

CHICAGO –Ald. Ray Lopez took to Twitter early Wednesday to announce his plans to challenge Mayor Lori Lightfoot in 2023.

"Chicago: I’m in!" the 15th Ward alderman posted on social media.

Lopez has long been among Lightfoot's loudest City Council critics on a variety of topics, including City Hall's response to looting and mayhem amid social unrest in 2020 and opposing the city's coronavirus vaccination requirement for city workers. And just about everything in between.

"I love my City and, like most Chicagoans, I am sick and tired of watching Chicago flounder at the hands of a rudderless ship," Lopez said in a statement. "The time is now to provide our great City with the compassion and leadership it deserves. I’m in, and I hope Chicago will join me."

Lightfoot has accused Lopez of being an ally of indicted Ald. Edward Burke.
