Here are the top three stories in Chicago today:
- Tragedy struck in Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood as an 8-year-old boy was accidentally shot and killed in his home early Tuesday. The boy and another male juvenile discovered a gun inside the residence, resulting in a single gunshot that hit the victim in the chest. Despite being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, the boy succumbed to his injuries, prompting an ongoing investigation by detectives. (Chicago Patch)
- Concession workers from Guaranteed Rate Field and Wrigley Field planned a protest before the Crosstown Classic last night, Aug. 15, with employees at Wrigley Field expressing dissatisfaction over a two-year contract delay with Levy Restaurants. Workers at Guaranteed Rate Field, employed by Delaware North, recently secured improved contract terms, including a $20 per hour minimum wage, enhanced health care, and pension benefits. The rally, organized by Unite HERE Local 1, is urging Levy Restaurants to extend similar contract conditions to the Wrigley Field staff, who were set to rally before the Cubs-Sox game at Wrigley Field as of Aug. 15. - The Michaels Organization, dedicated to creating vibrant communities, has granted $203,000 in college scholarships to 33 residents in its affordable living communities in Chicago through its nonprofit affiliate, The Michaels Organization Educational Foundation. This marks the 19th year of scholarship support in Chicago, with a total of over $1.15 million awarded to date. The scholarship recipients, pursuing diverse fields of study including health care, business, music, and more, highlight the organization's commitment to fostering education and community growth.
