Chicago Bears Name Matt Nagy New Head Coach

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator was one of six candidates the team interviewed for the job.

CHICAGO, IL — Matt Nagy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been named as new head coach of the Chicago Bears, according to the Chicago Tribune. Nagy, 39, replaces John Fox, who was fired a week ago after three losing seasons in Chicago.

The Bears interviewed six candidates for the job, including New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and Minnesota Vikings coordinators Pat Shurmur and George Edwards, the report stated. Vic Fangio, Chicago's defensive coordinator, also was interviewed.

Nagy, who will be introduced at a Tuesday press conference, had been working as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Chiefs for the past five seasons. He spent his last game with the team watching the Tennessee Titans stage a second-half comeback to beat Kansas City 22-21 in the AFC Wild Card game Saturday.

Nagy's hiring ends speculation of reuniting the Bears with former quarterback and current University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. Although he was never interviewed by the team, many fans had hoped the outspoken coach — who had a successful-but-brief tenure in the pro ranks coaching the San Francisco 49ers before going to Michigan — would bring his fiery style to Chicago and help foster the development of quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
