After the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday issued a ruling that effectively overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that had made abortion legal for women across the country, Mayor Lori Lightfoot declared Chicago a sanctuary city for women.

Gov. J.B. Priztker announced he would call a special legislative session to "take swift action to further enshrine our commitment to reproductive health care rights and protections."

  • Local road constructions have slowed in part to a labor dispute with heavy equipment operators affecting Chicago-area stone quarries. International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 officials say quarry owners have negotiated in bad faith, Jonah Meadows reports. (Patch)
  • Chicago is home to the first-ever Black-owned sliced bread company. The Black Bread Company launched in 2021 and has a mission to inspire school kids and allow community members to invest in what has become a business worth $51 million. (Patch)
  • A 19-year-old man was charged with shooting at a Rogers Park police station. Lanny Cantway is accused of shooting a semi-automatic pistol into the building. (Patch)
  • A five-month old girl was fatally shot in the head in the South Shore neighborhood Friday night. "That's a five month old baby. Nine months she carried that baby, nourished that baby. And it take a damn fool to discharge that weapon and take baby's life," activist Andrew Holmes said. (NBC5)
