Chicago Man Faces Multiple Charges In Assault Of Postal Worker: Police

CHICAGO — A 44-year-old Chicago man faces multiple felony charges, including attempted criminal sexual assault and a vehicular hijacking charge in connection with the alleged assault of a postal worker in the city’s Little Village neighborhood, police said.

Cesar Ramirez was arrested on Monday, two days after police said he attempted to sexually assault a 28-year-old postal worker just before 10 a.m., Chicago Police said on Wednesday. Police said that Ramirez battered the postal worker after she got into her mail truck and found Ramirez there waiting for her.

Ramirez attempted to sexually assault the woman before she was able to escape, prosecutors allege. Police said that Ramirez then stole the postal vehicle in the 2800 block of South Pulaski Road. The vehicle was later recovered, police said. The postal worker was taken to a local hospital and was released after being checked over by doctors.

The Office of the Postal Inspector had offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. Police released surveillance footage of the person they believed to be involved in the attack.

Ramirez was charged with one felony count of aggravated kidnapping, one felony count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault and threatening the life of another, one felony count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse and threatening the life of another, aggravated battery of a government employee, unlawful restraint, vehicular hijacking and receiving or possessing stolen property, police said.

Ramirez was scheduled to appear in bond court on Wednesday, police said.
