Here are the top three stories today in Chicago:

  1. A Chicago police officer remains hospitalized in good condition after an officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop in the Englewood neighborhood. The vehicle involved in the stop was put into reverse and backed into the squad car, leading to gunfire exchanged between the officers and the vehicle. The incident is under investigation by both the police and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, and the officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days as per Chicago Police Department policy. (Chicago Patch)
  2. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is engaging with the city's youth to gather ideas on how to allocate taxpayer dollars for the upcoming budget, which currently appropriates around $16.4 billion. The recent budget roundtable allowed young people aged 13-24 to share their thoughts on issues like affordable housing, public health, infrastructure, public art, and community safety, which will be considered for the next budget year starting in January. The goal is to ensure that the budget reflects the diversity of voices in the city and represents the needs of its communities. (The Center Square)
  3. Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Chicago on Monday, Jul. 31, arriving at Chicago Midway International Airport and serving as a keynote speaker for the UnidosUS 2023 Annual Conference at McCormick Place. Her speech will focus on the economic power of the Hispanic community during one of the largest gatherings of Latino leaders in the country. This will be Harris' second trip to Chicago in a short span, and she is expected to return on Aug. 11 for a meeting on gun safety. (NBC Chicago)
