CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was shot, as was a suspect in an early-morning burglary at a Gold Coast business Monday in an exchange of gunfire, police said. The officer and the suspect were both taken to an area hospital.

Police said they made contact with an armed suspect after responding to a report of a burglary at a retail business at around 4:16 a.m. in the 0-100 block of West Walton Street.

NBC Chicago reported that the business that was burglarized was the Prada store on Oak Street, where a police spokesman said several people attempted a smash-and-grab burglary. The spokesman told reporters that several people and several vehicles were involved in the incident, and that one person attempted to drive a vehicle through the front of the Prada store.

Police said the suspect did not comply with orders to stop running after he began to flee the scene on foot, and that police officers and the suspect exchanged gunfire. A 55-year-old officer was struck in the leg, police said, and was taken to Northwestern Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said officers immediately began rendering care to the suspect, who also suffered gunshot wounds, and applied a tourniquet to the injury. NBC reported that the suspect was undergoing surgery.
