KANKAKEE, IL — Two people are dead and one other person is seriously injured after a shooting outside the Kankakee County Courthouse Thursday morning, officials told Patch. Two people were also in custody in what police called a "targeted" attack.

The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. between the courthouse on 450 E. Court St. and the county jail.

Police arrested Miguel and Victor Andrade, who authorities said shot an unnamed man as he left the courthouse. The pair were approached by Antonio Hernandez, who was holding multiple weapons, including a long gun, authorities said. According to police, Hernandez began firing at the two men, fatally shooting Victor Andrade in the street and the unnamed man on the sidewalk.

A Momence police officer who was at the courthouse at the time confronted 23-year-old Miguel Andrade in the parking lot and he surrendered, Kankakee Police Chief Robin Passwater said.

Police told reporters the shooting was a gang-related "targeted" attack and that the unnamed victim is a men in his 20s.

Passwater said all four men involved were members of or in some way tied to the same gang, but it was unclear how they knew one another. The Andrades both lived in Kankakee, while Hernandez is believed to be from Waukegan.

"I know this is a tragic event for the people of the city of Kankakee," Passwater said during a news conference. "We are going to do our best to solve it."

Officials said they recovered multiple firearms from the scene. Police will hold another news conference later Thursday evening where they hope to give a "motive for the shooting," Passwater said.

No details were released about the wounded man, who underwent surgery following the shooting.
