- The community is demanding more cameras to be installed at Rainbow Beach following an incident in which a four-year-old was assaulted by a man in the restroom. On the Fourth of July, it was reported that a man came into the restroom, assaulted the young victim who was in there, and fled from the scene; he has yet to be found as of the time of publication. Community activists have done their part in handing out flyers supporting their demand, as well as pushing the search to find the man responsible for this crime. (CBS Chicago)
- A person believed to have a connection to the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Ulysses Campos in Franklin Park has been taken into custody. In the 2800 block of Elder Lane a bit after 10:00 p.m., Campos was playing near an alley when gunshots were fired from a moving vehicle nearby. The child was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the chest and pronounced dead in the hospital. Through investigation, the vehicle was located nearby in Leyden Township and a person of interest was taken into custody; it is unclear if it is believed this is the shooter. (NBC Chicago)
- Thanks to a powerful solar storm coming to the Midwest, a few residents in the Chicago area may be able to see the Northern Lights later this week. The peak for viewability is expected to be late Wednesday night into Thursday morning when aurora activity is predicted to be at its highest. If you are interested in checking out the Northern Lights, it would be best to get away from city lights between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m.; your eyes may take about 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness. With the solar cycle peaking in 2024, there will be more opportunities to see such strong displays according to experts. (NBC Chicago)
