Gun Owner Fatally Shoots Alleged Robber Outside Store: Cops

The shooting happened Sunday in the South Loop, and the Lawndale man, 37, was pronounced dead on Christmas.

CHICAGO, IL — A 37-year-old Lawndale man was killed after he was shot when he allegedly tried to rob a 31-year-old gun owner with a concealed carry permit Sunday in the South Loop, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Corey Haggard was pronounced dead at around 11:37 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, at Stroger hospital, the report added.

The incident happened at about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 24, outside a store in the 1200 block of South Jefferson Street, the report stated. Haggard allegedly confronted the other man as he left the business, the report added.

According to Chicago police, Haggard allegedly threatened the victim with a gun and demanded his money, the report stated. The victim gave up his property before opening fire and fatally shooting Haggard in the chest, the report added.

Detectives are conducting a death investigation concerning the shooting, and an autopsy is set for Tuesday, the Sun-Times reports.

Haggard was one of five men slain in shooting over the four-day Christmas weekend, the report stated. At least 20 people also were hurt in city shootings during that time span, the report added. Last year, 11 people were fatally shot during the holiday weekend.
