Lightfoot Set To Appoint Chicago's First Asian Woman Ward Boss

Chinatown native Nicole Lee would replace felonious former 11th Ward Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson, the grandson and nephew of Chicago mayors.

CHICAGO — Mayor Lori Lightfoot tapped Chinatown native Nicole Lee to replace felonious former 11th Ward alderman Patrick Daley Thompson, the grandson and nephew of Chicago mayors who was forced to resign after being convicted for cheating on his taxes and bank fraud last month.

“Nicole Lee has spent her life expanding and amplifying 11th ward issues and voices,” Lightfoot said in a statement. “Her dedication to empowering communities and building coalitions is evident in her career and in her involvement in a variety of community organizations. She is the right choice to make sure 11th ward residents are fully represented on the Chicago City Council.”

The mayor introduced Lee as the first Asian-American woman ward boss at a Thursday afternoon news conference. Lee's appointment is set for a City Council confirmation vote at a special meeting on Monday.

Lee emerged as the mayor's pick after candidates who applied for the appointment were interviewed by a four-person selection committee chaired by Ald. Michelle Harris.

Lee, who holds a master's degree in public policy from University of Chicago, is a director at United Airlines responsive for the Chicago-based company's social impact strategy and nonprofit partnerships. She currently serves on UIC Asian American Advisory Council. In the past, Lee has led the Haines Elementary School Council and served as president of the Chicago Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans.

"The 11th Ward is a diverse community of hard-working people who embody the grit, love, and neighborhood pride that make Chicago a great city," said Lee. “It’s a tremendous honor to receive this appointment to serve my fellow residents of the 11th Ward.”

Lee's family does have connections to the Daley political dynasty she is set to replace.

Her father, Gene Lee, was a former aide to former Mayor Richard Daley. In 2014, he was convicted and sentenced to five years probation for stealing $90,000 from charities. His conviction was not connected to his role in the Daley administration.

When asked whether she had concerns about the criminal history of Lee's father, Lightfoots said, "Nicole is her own person."
