Man Hurt By Falling Debris From Michigan Avenue High-Rise

Seven cars also were damaged by pieces of the building Tuesday, causing the city to close surrounding streets.

CHICAGO, IL — Michigan Avenue was closed between Randolph and Lake streets Tuesday afternoon because of falling debris from a high-rise, according to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications. Photos and videos from the scene posted online show scaffolding hanging from the building at 150 N. Michigan Ave.

According to ABC 7 Eyewitness News, at least one person was hurt by the falling debris. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, WGN News reports.

The debris — a davit, which keeps scaffolding fixed to the building — also damaged at least seven vehicles when it fell from the 10th floor of the Michigan Avenue building, according to ABC 7. The high-rise's davit broke from the roof when the scaffolding system failed, the report added.

Work crews planned to pull the davit off the building by creating a hole in an 11th-floor window and pulling it through, the report stated. Once the davit is removed and the danger of falling debris is eliminated, the city will reopen streets to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, the report added.
