Man Pulled From Chicago River Near Salt Shed ID'd: Police

Norman Walton, 63, has been identified as the person found dead near the music venue and police have not yet released details of his death.

CHICAGO — A man who worked as an apartment building engineer in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood for more than two decades has been identified as the person pulled from the Chicago River near the Salt Shed music venue last week.

Officials announced that Norman Walton, 63, has been identified as the “John Doe” who was pronounced dead after being pulled from the river around 7 p.m. on July 13. Police have not yet announced how he ended up in the river or what caused his death.

ABC7 reported on Monday that Walton’s long-time girlfriend, Lawanda Fields, reported Walton missing on July 11 after he left for work and never returned. Fields, who did not respond to a message sent to her on Monday by Patch, said that Walton’s truck was stolen and that he would not do anything to harm himself.

Walton is survived by four children and seven grandchildren, the family told ABC7. Fields is the second person in a month to be pulled from the river near the music venue, which is in the 1300 block of North Elston Avenue.

"I want to know what happened, who did this, because he wouldn't have done this to himself and his truck is missing," Fields told the television station. "It's just something not right and I don't know what it is."
