Martin Luther King Day 2018: What's Open, Closed In Chicago

CHICAGO, IL — The country honors the life and achievements of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a national holiday in his name Monday, Jan. 15.

Although it's a federal holiday, most retail businesses around the city will be open. But it's always idea to call ahead and check.

Here's a look at how Martin Luther King Jr. Day will affect institutions and services around Chicago:

Schools: No classes for Chicago Public Schools.

City Government: City Hall and city offices will be closed. County, state and federal government offices will be closed, too.

Chicago Public Library: All branches will be closed.

Chicago Park District: Although the district's offices will be closed, most parks will be open but with reduced holiday hours. City ice rinks will be open, as well as the conservatories in Garfield Park and Lincoln Park. Go to the district's website for more information.

Postal Service: No mail delivery, and all post offices will be closed.

Banks: Most financial institutions will be closed. Call ahead to be sure.
