Here are the top three stories in Chicago today:
- Brandon Johnson, Chicago's mayor-elect, delivered his first address to the Illinois General Assembly in Springfield yesterday. Johnson called for collaboration between city and state officials while commending the legislature for its "progressive values." He praised the General Assembly for its legislation that increased investment in social services and alluded to the state's budget as a model for his incoming mayoral administration, emphasizing public safety and youth employment. - Illinois Board of Education denies Urban Prep Academy's appeal to revoke the institution's charter status, affirming the earlier decision by the Chicago Board of Education. The schools were found to be non-compliant with legal requirements and charter contract. Chicago Public Schools will operate a high-quality CPS-run high school at the current Bronzeville and Englewood campus locations. (NBC Chicago)
- Five students at Uplift Community High School on the North Side of Chicago were taken to hospitals on Wednesday after consuming gummies, with one in serious condition. Emergency responders arrived at the scene after the students ate gummies from a dispensary. Fortunately, all students are expected to recover from the incident. (Chicago Patch)
