Here are the top three stories in Chicago today:

  1. On Thursday, mayor-elect Brandon Johnson revealed Rich Guidice as his incoming chief of staff. Rich Guidice, the executive director for Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications, spent the last few years overseeing the city's emergency response efforts and 911 call center. Johnson also selected Dr. Cristina Pacione-Zayas, a current state senator serving the 20th district, as his incoming first deputy chief of staff. The announcements come after Johnson named the inaugural chairs for his "Chicago for the People" transition team, which will include 21 prominent Illinois political figures on his inauguration to the office on May 15. (NBC Chicago)
  2. Senate Democrats joined advocates on Wednesday to raise awareness of the needs of those impacted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. During the Week of Action, advocates from the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter worked to make Illinois dementia-capable by advancing legislation to train those who care for or interact with someone living with this disease. Senate Bill 216, sponsored by Edly-Allen, would require public guardians to undergo at least one hour of training on how to recognize, care for, and interact with patients who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. (Illinois Senate Democratic)
  3. The Grasshopper Club is partnering with local businesses to celebrate 4/20 through the weekend. As Chicago's first independent, black-owned marijuana dispensary, The Grasshopper Club is joining seven different restaurants, all within a block of Logan Square, to redefine the cannabis experience and offer deals and discounts for the holiday. Today in Chicago:

  • NOSTALGICO FRIDAYS At The Mine Chicago (10:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • In an effort to help survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence get around, The Cook County Sheriff's Office is partnering with Uber to donate $10,000 in vouchers. Victims Support Services will be booking the rides so victims can remain anonymous. (CBS Chicago)
  • Meyers Ace Hardware in Bronzeville might seem like a typical hardware store, but this former auto garage was converted into the legendary Sunset Cafe jazz club in 1921! The old jazz stage and unique mural are still visible. To learn the full story, visit the link. (Chicago Architecture Center via Instagram)
  • The body of a missing Illinois U.S. Navy sailor was found Wednesday night along the shores of Lake Michigan. Seamus Gray, 21, was last seen in the early morning hours of Mar. 18 outside a bar called Ibiza after he and his friends were escorted out for being intoxicated. His body was discovered Wednesday by a ComEd utility worker. The Lake County Coroner has identified the body as Gray. (MyStateline.com)
