Here are the top three stories today in Chicago:

  1. Ashely Griggs, the mother of Ohio State football freshman and Chicago native Carnell Tate, tragically died in a drive-by shooting in Chicago's West Side on Jul. 16. Griggs, 40, was among a group of five leaving an event when an unidentified assailant opened fire from a vehicle, resulting in her fatality. The police are conducting an ongoing investigation with no suspects in custody yet. Ohio State University confirmed Griggs' relationship with Carnell Tate and expressed their deep sadness, pledging their support to him during this difficult time. (NBC Chicago)
  2. Illinois residents who have used Instagram between Aug. 10, 2015, and Aug. 16, 2023, may be eligible for compensation as part of a proposed class-action settlement related to alleged violations of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act. The lawsuit was filed in DuPage County's 18th Judicial Circuit Court and seeks to address the collection and storage of biometric information by the social media company. To be eligible for compensation, residents must complete a claim form before Sep. 27. (NBC Chicago)
  3. In suburban Chicago, an SUV crashed into Fontano's Subs restaurant on Monday, resulting in critical injuries to a 14-year-old boy who was struck outside the establishment. The SUV also hit three other people inside the restaurant, causing serious injuries, while a fourth person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, and the driver, who was uninjured, has not yet faced any charges. (U.S. News & World Report)
