CHICAGO — Former "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in Cook County jail, 30 months' probation and to pay the city of Chicago more than $120,000 in restitution and a $25,000 fine on felony convictions for orchestrating a hate crime against himself and lying about it to police.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the actor's sentence should send a message that "making false claims and allegations will not be tolerated."

Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx called Smollett's prosecution a "kangaroo court."
