Residing in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood, Paul's summers aren’t just about relaxing away from the classroom, but about making a difference.
After witnessing family members struggle with lung issues, Paul knew firsthand the importance of funding research. For the past two years, Paul has participated in the CowaLUNGa™ Charity Bike Tour as a virtual rider raising money for lung disease. Paul had previously participated in stair climbs like Hustle Chicago® stair climb, however, as his knees began to protest, he sought a new way to make an impact. That's when he migrated to cycling.
Through social media he shares his journey, engaging his community and inspiring others to join the cause. Paul will ride a mile for every $10 donated.
“You get some people who are nervous to make me ride that far,” said Paul, “and other people who put down $100 to give me a challenge. It puts the ownership on them. I tell my supporters: ‘I’ll keep riding as long as fundraising keeps coming in.’”
In 2023, he rode 200 miles. He is looking to beat that number this summer.
For Paul, what sets CowaLUNGa apart from other bike rides is the freedom it offers. As summer approaches, Paul eagerly anticipates hitting the road once again.
His advice for aspiring riders? “Start small. Start off riding around the neighborhood. Throw your bike in the car and take it with you.”
As a virtual rider, Paul charts his own course exploring the city's diverse neighborhoods and scenic trails, mapping the route on his Fitbit to keep track of the miles. Starting in June, the first ride is always a quick eight miles. From then until August, Paul will do another eight to ten bike rides to get in all the miles. From the tranquil forest preserves to the chaos of Midway, every ride is an adventure.
“It’s got me to see new places, places I never thought I would ride a bike to,” remarked Paul.
