CHICAGO — A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 9-year-old boy in the Cabrini Green neighborhood, police said.

Janari Ricks, a fourth grader who loved basketball and math, died after being shot in the chest around 6 p.m. Friday while playing with friends in a parking lot in the 500 block of West Locust Street.

On Tuesday, police announced murder charges had been filed against 39-year-old Darrell Johnson, who was arrested Sunday afternoon.

Police said Johnson fired shots at a group of men in a parking lot who were standing near Janari. Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said officers were able to identify and arrest Johnson thanks to cooperation from neighbors.

"All the video in the world and all the hard work of the detectives were not able to make an arrest unless the community helps us," he said. "In this case, they did. We were able to make a speedy arrest ... and we're hoping to secure charges within the next 48 hours by working closely with our state's attorney's office."

Janari's killing was especially troubling for Ald. Walter Burnett (42nd), who grew up in the Cabrini Green row houses next door to the boy's family. He said all the people suspected of being involved in the boy's death — the shooter and intended targets — are from families that have known each other for 50 years.

"I empathize with the parents of the children who did what they did. But I want to say this: Although they come from the neighborhood, they don't live there anymore. People, you don't live there anymore. Stop coming over to the neighborhood to do your dirt. ... Stop coming to the row houses and doing things. The people in the row houses are just trying to survive, just trying to live, and just trying to raise their families," Burnett said.

"I want everyone to know ... the guy, the guy shooting at, and the guy who was doing the shooting, neither one of them live over there. The violence did not come from people living in the row houses. The violence comes from people who go over to the row houses and do their dirt. We need to keep these people out of our neighborhood."

Janari was among 33 people shot, including nine who were killed, during another violent weekend in Chicago, police said.

The weekend body count was the lowest total for any weekend in July, police Superintendent David Brown said. "None of it matters when a child loses his or her life," Brown said. "Unfortunately, Janari became the 38th juvenile murder victim of gun violence this year. Five of those victims were under the age of 10."
