Police Officer Shot During Gun Fight Near Grand Central District

One officer was shot and wounded, and another suffered injuries during a Thursday morning shootout near the Grand Central police district.

CHICAGO — Three police officers and a suspected shooter were shot and wounded during a Thursday morning gunfight near the Grand Central police district, authorities said.

Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters Thursday that one officer was shot in the chin and his bullet-proof vest. A second officer was shot in the hip. A third officer was shot in his bullet-proof vest. All three officers were taken to Chicago hospitals. A fourth officer, who was not shot, was taken to hospital after complaining of chest pains, police said.

A video posted on YouTube captured audio of dozens of shots fired.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted a plea for Chicago to pray for the injured officers.

"Today is a searing reminder of the danger our men and women of our Police Department face every day they put on their uniforms and leave their homes," the mayor wrote. "This is the sacrifice they make in order to serve and protect our city and fellow residents."

The shootout in the 5500 block of West Grand Avenue occurred around 9:40 a.m. as officers tried to arrest a man wanted for vehicular hijacking. During the arrest, the suspect fired shots at officers, police said in a statement. The suspect, who police have yet to identify, was shot and wounded, police said.

Police declined to offer more details. In a statement, officials said the police-involved shooting is being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability. Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on mandatory administrative leave for 30 days.
