SIU Student Shot, Killed At Party Near Campus

18-year-old Keeshanna Jackson was one of four people shot at an off-campus party Sunday night, police said.

CARBONDALE, IL — A shooting near Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Sunday morning left one student dead and three other people injured, according to police.

Freshman Keeshanna Jackson, 18, was at a party in the 500 block of West Cherry Street when she was shot shortly before 3:15 a.m., according to a news release. Jackson, originally from Chicago, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Three others were injured, though police have not identified them. A spokesperson for the department said their injuries were "non-life-threatening."

In a statement, university officials expressed remorse and reiterated the mental health resources available to students who may have known Jackson or feel unsafe around campus.

"We are heartbroken to lose a member of the Saluki family and extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends," wrote SIU Chancellor Austin Lane in a statement. "Carbondale Police Department notified us of the incident ... and we are assisting CPD as it carries out its investigation."

Police have not yet identified any suspects in the shooting. The Southern Illinoisan reported multiple shooters may have been involved.

A candlelight vigil was held for Jackson Sunday night.
