CHICAGO — An infant was shot and critically wounded in the backseat of a car traveling northbound on the Bishop Ford Freeway near 115th Street on the South Side Monday morning, an Illinois State Police spokeswoman said.

After hearing a single shot fired, the driver noticed the 3-year-old strapped in a car seat was injured and drove to a nearby hospital, police said. The infant was in critical condition. No other injuries were reported, police said.

Illinois State Police are investigating. The Bishop Ford's northbound lanes were closed while police scoured the expressway for evidence
