Thunderstorms Cancel, Delay Flights At Chicago Airports

About 150 flights were grounded Monday morning at O'Hare and Midway airports because of heavy rain.

CHICAGO, IL — Heavy rains and thunderstorms Monday morning have led to the cancelation and delay of more than 100 flights at Chicago's airports. The severe weather is expected to continue into the evening, with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds in isolated areas, according to the National Weather Service.

At O'Hare International Airport, about 126 flights had been cancelled as of 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, the Chicago Department of Aviation, which operates the city's airports, reports. Travelers also were seeing an average delay of around 64 minutes at the airport.

Flights out of Midway Airport were faring better. Only 24 flights had been grounded at that airport, and the average delay was just more than 15 minutes, according to the city's aviation department.

Thunderstorms are expected to continue in the upcoming days, but the chances of that forecast diminish as the week goes on, the National Weather Service reports.
