Thunderstorms Force Ground Stop At O'Hare

Departures to the airport were grounded as of shortly before 6 p.m.

CHICAGO — O'Hare International Airport was under a ground stop Sunday evening due to thunderstorms, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Departures to the airport were grounded as of shortly before 6 p.m., and the ground stop was expected to continue until 7:30 p.m.

The city was under a limited thunderstorm risk Sunday night and was at risk for winds up to 60 mph and hail the size of a quarter, according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook from the National Weather Service

"Scattered thunderstorms will focus in two corridors through early evening, areas near and south of I-80, and across portions of far northern Illinois," the outlook said. "The strongest storms will be capable of producing locally damaging wind gusts and hail. Additional isolated non-severe thunderstorms are possible later tonight."
