Who Dung It? Doggie DNA Used to ID Doo-Doo Culprits

A West Loop apartment building is requiring dog owners to submit cheek swabs of their pets to help nab the poop-etrator.

CHICAGO, IL — Management at a West Loop apartment building is cracking down on tenants who fail to clean up after their pets. Residents at The Luxe, a 102-unit apartment building at 1222 W. Madison St., were required earlier this year to have their dogs submit to cheek swabs, setting up a DNA database in an effort to identify the poopetrators.

The apartment complex was already having a problem with dog waste on the grounds. Dog poop that goes unscooped at the Luxe will be traced back to the owner who can face fines and possible eviction.

The Luxe is working with PooPrints, part of Knoxville-based BioPet Vet Lab. Under the Pet DNA program, stools found in or around the apartment building will be sent to a lab in Tennessee for testing and identification.

Greystar, the South Carolina-based company managing the apartment building, sent a letter to residents calling dog waste "a real concern for our community" and giving owners until Jan. 31 to get their pets swabbed.

Residents will be fined $250 for the first offense and $350 for each additional one. Poop-etrators beware!
