CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — Nearly 100 brand-new gym shoes will be given to kids in Chicago Heights this Saturday. The Chicago Heights Police Department has 98 pairs they will give to families affected by the coronavirus pandemic from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 13 in the south parking lot of their police station at 1601 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

"It will be first come, first served due to only having a limited supply," the police department wrote on social media this week. Only Chicago Heights residents will be eligible to receive a free pair of shoes and residency must be provided when picking them up.

Sizes available range from a 13 child's size to a 6 in youth. Each household is limited to one pair of shoes, CHPD said.

"We ask that only families that have been truly impacted by COVID-19 or other impact reasons that would love to have an opportunity to get their child a new pair of shoes but couldn't right now because of difficult times they may be facing."

Police are also asking the child who will wear the shoes should come with and meet with the officers who are participating so "they can get to know who we are."
