Heights Eyes Land for Scrap Metal Company

The City of Chicago Heights is asking Cook County for control over six parcels of land for the expansion of a local scrap metal company, reports the Northwest Indiana Times.

The money is being requested through the county's No Cash Bid program—a program designed to turn tax-delinquent properties over to local governments barring a year-long repayment plan. Right now, five of the six parcels are vacant.

The city's intent, according to the report, is to hand over the land to scrap metal company Wilkins & Son LLC. Currently, the company is leasing the land from its owners. The addition of more land space would allow for a new trailer dismantling center—and more jobs with it. That would come on top of the 50 or so new positions recently created by Wilkins & Son's expansion.
