Lost Shelter Dog Survives Blizzard, Found Safe In Chicago Heights

A group of dedicated volunteers helped find Artie, who withstood two weeks of freezing temperatures and a massive amount of snowfall.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL - Artie, the lost shelter dog who got away during a walk with one of the volunteers at the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights two weeks ago, was rescued in the middle of the night after days of hard work by a group of dedicated volunteers. The dog was found in the Eastgate area of Chicago Heights after being on the run during nine consecutive days of snow and frigid temperatures in the Chicago Heights area.

"We had constant sightings and residents helping to feed him and ultimately trap him," the shelter wrote on its Facebook page on Monday while announcing the good news.

Artie was new to the shelter on the morning of Jan. 28 when he broke free during a walk with a SSHS volunteer. At the time, it was believed he was still in the area by the railroad tracks nearby.

During his two weeks on the lam, the Chicago-area has endured a back-to-back blizzards, low temperatures in the zero range and highs only getting to 40 degrees twice. But somehow Artie survived the elements and now has nothing but good times to look forward to. In fact, the neighborhood resident who spent the most time trying to rescue Artie has expressed interest in adopting him.
