Man, 23, ID'd As Victim In Fatal Crete Township Shooting: Coroner

The man was one of two people found shot inside a car Sept. 2 in Crete Township.

CRETE TOWNSHIP, IL — A 23-year-old Indiana man has been identified as one killed in a Crete Township shooting last week.

The man—identified as Angel Torres-Lopez, of Lowell—died at Franciscan Health Dyer Sept. 3, the Lake County Indiana Coroner's Office said Monday.

Torres-Lopez was one of two people found with gunshot wounds inside a car late Sept. 2, after Will County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 2300 block of East Exchange Street in Crete Township for a reported shooting.

Deputies found a black sedan parked in the roadway with multiple bullet holes and shattered windows. A preliminary search of the scene revealed approximately 40 shell casings in the area.

The driver, identified only as a 25-year-old pregnant woman, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and hand, while the male passenger was struck in the hip and buttock, the sheriff's office said. Deputies provided lifesaving aid until medical personnel arrived and took both victims to a local hospital.

The woman was reportedly in critical but stable condition late last week, according to the sheriff's office.

Based on preliminary findings, detectives said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

An investigation is ongoing.
