New Area Code Coming To South Suburbs Friday: ICC

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — Starting Friday, residents across the south suburbs with a 708 area code may start to see phone numbers beginning in 464 come across their screens.

The Illinois Commerce Commission approved the use of the new area code due to an increase in phones registered to the south suburban area last year. While this does not mean existing numbers will change, officials said anyone who registers a new phone or telephone line in the area may be assigned a 464 code.

"The 464 area code will co-exist everywhere in this region with the 708 area code," the ICC said in a statement.

Local calls will still be classified as local calls to a number starting with 464 but those within the overlay region will still have to dial 1+ the ten digit phone number for calls between overlay zones.

Three digit emergency numbers such as 911 will remain the same.

Areas affected by the change are Alsip, Beecher, Bellwood, Berwyn, Blue Island, Bridgeview, Broadview, Burbank, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Chicago Ridge, Country Club Hills, Crest Hill, Crete, Dolton, Elmwood Park, Evergreen Park, Flossmoor, Forest Park, Glenwood, Harvey, Harwood Heights, Hazel Crest, Hickory Hills, Homewood, Justice, La Grange, Lansing, Lyons, Markham, Matteson, Maywood, Melrose Park, Midlothian, Mokena, Norridge, Northlake, Oak Forest, Oak Lawn, Oak Park, Orland Park, Palos Hills, Palos Park, Park Forest, Richton Park, River Forest, River Grove, Riverdale, South Holland, Steger, Tinley Park, Westchester, Western Springs and Worth.
