'Large' Fight Breaks Out In Chicago Heights After Woman Shot

A massive fight broke out in Beacon Hill Tuesday afternoon after Chicago Heights police arrived on the scene to help a gunshot victim.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL β€” A massive fight broke out on the streets of Beacon Hill Tuesday afternoon after Chicago Heights police arrived on the scene to help a 26-year-old woman who had been shot. The crowd was so big, it led to a dramatic shut down of the neighborhood by police from across the south suburbs that was captured on video by news media. Many arrests have been made, police said.

Police Chief Thomas Rogers said that police arrived at the scene at about 3:20 p.m after residents called to report someone had been shot. They found Dominique Washington of Chicago Heights with a gunshot wound to her leg.

While police where there searching for the shooter and witnesses, a "large group of individuals" gathered there and many of them began to fight, Rogers said.

Police from across several south suburban departments were called to help, and they swarmed the 600 block of Andover Street with rifles drawn, followed by an armored vehicle. They were there to control the crowd and keep residents safe, Rogers said. News helicopters with cameras showed a crowd of police with the assault-style rifles and a slow-moving, armored vehicle heading down the 600 block of Andover Street. They appeared to block off streets in a U-shaped formation.

According to Rogers, many arrests have been made, and charges are pending.
