Woman Jumps from Second Story Window to Escape Chicago Heights Fire

A Chicago Heights firefighter was also injured in the blaze on Chicago Road.

The called in the arson task force to investigate a fire near the 2300 block of Chicago Road, according to fire officials.

A 27-year-old tenant of the apartment and commercial building called in the fire just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday before realizing she was trapped on the second floor, according to Asst. Fire Chief James Angell.

"She tried to take the stairs and couldn’t, so she ended up jumped out of the second-floor window," Angell said.

The woman was treated for injuries at .

A 55-year-old Chicago Heights firefighter was also injured in the blaze. He was taken to St. James to be treated for heat exhaustion, Angell said.

"He seems to be doing fine," Angell said. "Both have been treated and released."

The building was a total loss. There was no business occupying the commercial part of the structure, and the woman was the only tenant in the apartment section.

Diring the fire, firefighters were called to a second blaze at an abandoned house 1426 Wallace. Multiple units helped out and there were no injuries the second fire, Angell said.
